Semi-Final: Real Sociedad vs Real Madrid
About Spanish Super Cup
It is a relatively young competition - inaugurated in 1982 - certainly comparing to other football crazed European countries. And it's a competition that for most cases, the competitors' list is well known in advance. That is usually the case in a league that is being dominated between two super teams. And yet, the Spanish Super Cup (Supercopa de Espania) which feature the champions of the league (La Liga) against the winner of the cup (Copa del Rey) is one of the most fascinating football competitions there are, mainly due to the excellence and excitement that are being provided curtesy of the Spanish clubs.
The
Spanish Supercupa is a two-legged, home and away football matches that are played
in August, right before the start of another La Liga campaign. The winner of
the cup is the first to host a game. Needless to say, most fans – at least
outside Spain - expect another match between power houses Barcelona and real
Madrid. Amazingly enough, those don't happen as often as one might expect, due
to the many surprises being carried out during the Copa del Rey competitions.
As so, the 2017 Supercopa El Clasico between the 2016-17 la Liga Champions Real
Madrid and 2016-17 winners of Copa del Rey Barcelona, was only the first time the
two featured since the 2012 edition.
In recent
years, of course, the Real Madrid-Barcelona rivalry has been
"encapsulated" by the rivalry between the world's two best players - Cristiano
Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Despite arrivals of stars such as Neymar and Luis
Suárez to Barcelona, and Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema to Madrid, the rivalry remained
a stepping stone to the Ronaldo-Messi battle, and has only been expanded to a
battle of the clubs' attacking trios - "BBC" (Bale, Benzema,
Cristiano) against "MSN" (Messi, Suárez, Neymar).
Over the
years, the Supercopa matches between the two teams have provided a lot of
unforgettable moments. Who can forget, for instance, Messi with a black eye, a bloody
mouth, holding his Barcelona shirt in his hands, celebrating scoring the
winning goal in the 92nd minute?
One more
memorable Supercopa played out in 1994 between champions Barcelona and cup
holders Real Zaragoza. Barcelona won the first leg 2-0 with goals from
Stoichkov and Amor. Zaragoza came back in the second leg and won 5-4 in a
fantastic match, but the cup went to Barcelona for the aggregated 6-5 score.
Over all,
Barcelona won the Supercopa a record number 12 times and was a runner up 10
more times. Real Madrid is second, with 10 wins and 5 runner ups. The third on
the list is Deportivo La Coruna with 3 wins.
Lionel
Messi is the Supercopa's top goal scorer, with 13 goals in 17 appearances. Raul
is second on the list with 7 goals scored in 12 appearances.
