About FC Porto
Oh, those magical nights in the Dragao, where 50 thousand adoring fans push their beloved team to the limit, to success and to special nights to remember, where the local blue and white perform their wonder on the pitch. Over the years, especially among European competitions, Porto has out-taken its Lisbon rivals Benfica and Sporting and maintained its ground as the premier, leading Portuguese football club of recent decades.
As with all Portuguese clubs, Porto has a fine youth academy – one of the finest in Europe – who has produced most of its nucleus – and the national team’s - along the years, the most talented of them were later sold to other European clubs for a hefty sum of money, that raised the necessary funds for the club to operate. Likewise, the club scouts are scatted all over the world, mostly in Southern America, and over the years Porto was able to buy mostly young and coming talents and later to sell them for a huge fee. The most notable among them are Brazil’s Mario Jardel, Hulk and Deco and Columbia’s Radamel Falcao and Jackson Martínez.
And along those lines, some of Europe’s elite coaches have started their career at Porto, and later left for other leading clubs. The most notable, of course, is Joss Mourinho, who has started as a translator and later became assistant coach for the late Sir Bobby Robson, before taking the helm and guiding Porto to unpreceded European glory.
Futebol Clube do Porto, or Porto for short, is a Portuguese club founded in 1893. The club is nicknamed the Dragons and is one of the traditional “Big Three” clubs in Portugal, along with Benfica and Sporting Lisbon. The team’s traditional home colors are blue and white stripes.
Porto is one of only two Portuguese sides to have won the Champions League, which they have won twice, most recently in 2004. The club has won the domestic league title, the Primeira Liga, on 29 occasion and the Portuguese Cup, the Taca de Portugal, 17 times. Other trophies the club has won include the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup and the European Super Cup. The club’s home stadium is the Estadio do Dragao, which opened in 2003. The stadium seats over 50,000 spectators and was used as one of the venues for UEFA Euro 2004 competition.
The club’s golden age has started in the early stages of the 90’s and as a matter of fact has continued ever since, without reaching the same peaks. Robson became manager after being fired from Sporting in the middle of the 1993-94 season, and he has guided the team to a cup final and the Champions League semi-final. During the next two seasons, Robson and Porto has won the first two titles in what would become a record five championships in a row.
But all that was the preview. The magic stared in 2002-03, as Porto appointed Mourinho as its coach. He not only delivered the local league and cup in his first season in charge, his team also won the UEFA Cup after defatting Celtic Glasgow in the final. That Porto team was based on players that would be the base for the national team in the decade o come, among them Ricardo Carvalho, Maniche, Paulo Ferreira and Helder Postiga. A year later, after another league title, Porto reached the Champions League final and beat AS Monaco 3-0.
Mourinho, as well as some notable players, left the club after that memorable season, but Porto hasn’t stopped. Ever since, the club has won 9 more league titles and 5 more domestic cups. And those magical European night at the Dragao, they sure have continued.
Joao Pinto holds the record for the club’s most appearances, having played 587 matches in all competitions - his entire career - for Porto between 1981-1997. Goalkeeper Vítor Baia has played 406 matches for the club on the stints (1988-1996, 1999-2007) and he is Porto’s most decorated player, having won 25 trophies during his time. The all-time top goal scorer is Fernando Gomes, who scored 352 goals for the club in all competitions between 1974-1980 and 1982-1989.
