About Racing Club de Avellaneda
Along its very long history, Racing Club de Avellaneda, or Racing Club, or simply Racing, has known – enjoyed or suffered - the full cycle of football experiences: success, championships and international trophies, relegations and promotions back to the first division, bankruptcies and getting back to financial stability. Along a history of over 100 years, Racing Club has remained one of Argentina's most glorious football clubs.
Someone remember Juventus' mad run of 9 consecutive Seria A titles? Someone have mentioned Bayern Munich's 11 consecutive Bundesliga titles (and counting)? Well, Racing Club has been there and done that, much, much earlier. Racing won Argentina's Primera Division 7 times in a row between 1913-1919. And not only that, but in seven of those memorable seasons the club went undefeated. Up to date, Racing has won a total of 18 Primera Division titles.
Some years after that stunning achievement, after a few more domestic titles, first international success came in 1967, when Racing won the Copa Libertadores for the first time, after overcoming Nacional from Uruguay. The same year, the club had also won the International Cup after beating Celtic Glasgow.
The 70's and 80's were hard times for the club, who was relegated down to the third division. It took time before Racing was able to get promoted back to the Primera Division and even win some trophies before it was hit hard by financial difficulties and stood on the brink of bankruptcy. It took emergency activity by the fans before the club was back to its feet.
Over the years, many players have worn the light-blue striped uniform of Racing Club and Argentina's national team. Among them one can mention goalkeeper Sergio Goycochea (1990-1991), Leopoldo Luque (1982, World Cup holder in 1978), Ubaldo Fillol (1971-1973, 1986-1989, Luque's teammate and Argentina's starting goalkeeper on the 1978 World Cup winner), Lisandro Lopez (2003-2005, 2016-2020, 2021), Diego Milito (1999-2003, 2014-2016, in between played for Zaragoza and Inter Milan, among others), Claudio Lopez (1992-1996, 2007-2008, also played for Valencia and Lazio) and Roberto Perfumo (1962-1970, considered to be one of Argentina's best ever midfielders, captain of the 1974 national team during the World Cup).
From 2023, Racing Club is coached by Fernando Gago, who came through the ranks at Boca Juniors and later played for Real Madrid, Roma and Valencia.
Racing Club has won 18 Primera Division titles (the last in 2018-19), 5 national cups, 1 Intercontinental Cup and 1 Copa Libertadores.
Racing Club play its home games in 61,000-seat Estadio Presidente Juan Domingo Peron, Argentina's second largest football venue, after River Plate's Estadio Monumental.
